Kaya Kaya festival started as a small street party and has now grown into one of the largest festivals in Curaçao. Kaya means 'street' in Papiamentu which is very appropriate for the location. A few streets in the Otrobanda district will be closed off for the festival. Annually, the festival attracts thousands of visitors and locals gather with visitors on the island to enjoy art, music and delicious food.
Art at Kaya Kaya festival
A big part of the Kaya Kaya festival are the works of art. These include paintings and murals. You can admire many works of art made by local artists and can be found in the streets of the festival. Kaya Kaya's goal is to refurbish the neighborhood and showcase the charms of Otrobanda. This will make the neighborhood a safer environment for local residents and visitors. Origin of Kaya Kaya
Before Kaya Kaya was the festival as we know it today, it started with a street party. There were not many visitors and it was not organized. The party turned out to be so fun and cozy that the founders of the current festival have expanded the party further. The first official edition was in 2018.
